Looking at investment charts and calculating new strategies is like breathing air to me. I am passionate about using all of my tools and data to design solutions so my clients can enjoy their lives and work on the things they love. My husband teases me that I’d rather be looking at my charts in the evening than going out to a party. Part of being able to visualize great solutions is to stay informed about not just the technical details of the investment world, but the context of our global economy and how those pieces potentially impact your individual holdings. To do that, I am on a constant learning journey. You’ll see from my bio that my education not only involves several graduate degrees, but also a great deal of diverse education and global interaction, which helps me understand competing views and insight into economies where we may invest. I’ve never been one to accept the status quo. When traditional retirement plans were the norm, we put in one of the first 401(k) plans in our area. Before tactical money management even had a name, we were utilizing strategies to help protect downside risk by moving out of some holdings as risk increased. Before hybrid management was touted as the ‘new’ thing, we were managing portfolios using low cost index funds partnered with well managed active portfolios.

Every day I wake up full of energy looking for ways I can do an even better job for you, my client. The prospect of helping you see your financial opportunities, protect you from harsh financial risks and put it all in a customized, well-tended and evolving solution, is the most exhilarating career I can imagine. I am blessed to have the best people on our team, and to have clients who love their families, love their work and are also trying to make a positive difference in the world.

Moving to Virginia to join Resource 1 in 2006 was a game changer in my life. It was quickly apparent that in order to keep up with Micki I needed to further my education, so my focus became attaining my master’s degree in Financial Services and completing several professional designations. Now, Micki will come to me for technical answers, which is a bit of a turnaround I really enjoy! My real passion is helping my clients simplify their multifaceted financial challenges. Oftentimes, understanding your insurance and investments can feel like trying to comprehend a foreign language. I love translating it for people and making it understandable, whether working with an individual or a large corporate client.

Fortunate to learn from some of the best advisors in financial services, I have also found ways to give back. Having been chosen to speak to several large groups of advisors, I not only am able to share our practice ideas, but also learn some great strategies to implement for our clients. Early in my career, I was invited to join the Heritage Group, a national study group comprised of advisors who are in family businesses and are dedicated to continuous learning. This study group has allowed me to bring many innovative ideas to our practice to benefit our clients.

A lot has changed since first moving to Virginia. I married Megan, a Southern girl from Charlotte, NC, so moving back to Wisconsin is definitely out of the picture – way too cold up there for her! We have 2 beautiful daughters, Ruby and Evelyn. If any of you have recently looked at the cost of college and weddings, you know that my girls will keep me working for a long time. This means that not only can I help you develop a plan to get to retirement, but I will be here to make sure you are taken care of throughout your retirement as well.

Matt-SpeakingMatt entered the financial services industry after graduating with honors from St. Norbert College in 2004. He earned his degree in Business Administration and a minor in Economics. Relocating to Virginia in 2006 to join Resource 1, Inc., Matt has qualified for Million Dollar Round Table every year since 2008 and has achieved Court of the Table honors four years and Top of the Table in 2017. He has spoken at numerous industry meetings, including the main stage at the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisor meeting and the Million Dollar Round Table annual meeting to an audience of 13,000 international members.

Matt earned his designation as a Certified Financial Planner, CFP® in 2008 and his Chartered Financial Consultant, ChFC in 2009. Matt also completed his Master of Science in Financial Services degree from the American College in 2011. His focus is on areas of personal financial advice, retirement planning and asset management; playing a vital role in corporate employee meetings and educational seminars.

Matt served on the board of the local NAIFA chapter and was President in 2012. He is also active in the Heritage Group, a national study group of young financial professionals who are being mentored in their career by successful relatives.

Matt currently resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Megan and daughters, Ruby and Evelyn.

Martha FowlkesMartha Fowlkes, Office Manager

Many exciting journeys start with “Yes”! Nearly 35 years ago I agreed to take a leap of faith, leaving the regional insurance office, to begin my collaboration with Micki in her sole proprietorship. She valued my ability to manage her office, to organize, process and prioritize paperwork and correspondence. And I saw in her a dedication and energy toward pioneering new ideas and delivering excellence. We made a dynamic team, expanding from captive insurance sales moving into independent markets and developing innovative qualified retirement plans. She then found a passion for money management and through each new development we complimented and encouraged each other’s strengths.   I managed the myriad small details which allowed her to focus on realizing the bigger vision. Our focus through all the years has been unwavering – our clients, who are our most valuable asset.

Micki and I additionally shared a special bond when she returned from an MDRT meeting in 1985 after hearing about a new charitable organization, The Make-A-Wish Foundation. She and I, along with 3 other local businessmen, formed Make-A-Wish of Virginia.   We worked tirelessly to grow and support the foundation and I took a brief hiatus to become the first Executive Director, continuing in many capacities there for over 20 years.   I later spent many volunteer hours with the Literacy Council of Tidewater, teaching adults to read.

I enjoy time with family, especially my father, who is 98 and living independently in Virginia Beach, and my two grandchildren who are in Reston, Virginia.

Following your passion can take you far….even from one coast to another! I am the most recent addition to the team at Resource 1. My husband Robert and I have recently moved with our two boys, John and Eric, from the Central Valley in California to Chesapeake, Virginia when Robert became the new CIO at Virginia Wesleyan University. We are enjoying the change to the East Coast very much.

In September of 2016, I came on board with Resource 1 and serve as the Registered Office Assistant, holding my Series 6, 63 and 7 Securities Licenses. It has been ten years since becoming licensed and beginning my career in financial services with Wachovia Bank. When I saw how valuable investing could be for my clients, it ignited a passion in me to help people prepare for their financial future and reduce the financial stress in their lives. Moving out of the banking arena and into the investment side was the key to fulfilling this desire. Another key to my success has been my slight tendency towards perfectionism (my closest friends call it OCD) – my extreme organization and attention to detail means getting it right for our clients the first time! Being part of the Resource 1 team, where excellence of service and character is of utmost importance, has allowed me to continue to follow my passion and is home for me.

One of my other passions has been volunteering at my local church and singing on the Worship Team. Robert and I have traveled on mission trips to Brazil seven years in a row with Geracao Justa, an international Christian non-profit organization that supports an orphanage in Itaberaba, Brazil and ministers extensively to leadership, youth, street children and victimized women, as well as directing several Bible colleges in Brazil and in Switzerland. Our family is currently involved in home church ministries in Virginia Beach.
